2006-2007 Band Achievements and Awards
Concert Band
Florida’s Premier Music Festival
MusicFest Orlando
April 13, 2007
Sixty-nine members of the Morristown
Hamblen West High School Band traveled to Orlando, Florida for the
“Florida’s Premier Music Festival” MusicFest Orlando, and received
high scores with the Disney classic, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah". Three highly
skilled, nationally acclaimed adjudicators evaluated the performance
of each group and awarded up to 100 points each. The scores were added
together to determine the final score. Ratings were based on the
following: Superior 300-270, Distinguished 269-225, Excellent 224-180,
and Good 179-0. They were awarded with the only Superior rating in the
competition by earning a score of 271 out of 300. Also, they earned
the overall recognition of the highest scoring Parade Band. The Drum
Major, Kendall Hickey, was honored with the Best Drum Major award with
a score of 279 out of 300. Coming home with a total of one plaque and
three trophies has brought great pride to the band, Mr. Thomas, the
school of Morristown West, and the community as a band of outstanding
performance.

The MWHS Concert Band entered in the
Grade 6, which is the hardest difficult of music in our state. The
Band was judged by three stage judges, Dan Havely, Les Hicken, and Bob
Lee, who each gave the band a Superior rating for its performance. The
captions in which the band was adjudicated were tone, intonation,
technique, balance, musical interpretation, and musical effect.
The band also sight-read a grade 4
piece and received a superior rating for its performance. The band
also qualified to participate in the state concert band festival in
April of 2008 in Murfreesboro.

from Westside Story. The opener song is "Maria". They will also perform
"Cool" and "America". The finale is a medley of "Tonight", "Gee,

The Knoxville Youth Orchestra (KJYO) kicks off the 2nd annual Knoxville Jazz Festival
with a concert of big band standards, Wednesday, February 28th. This
free concert will be at the
East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. The KJYO is made up of high school students from
Knoxville and the surrounding area. Andrew LaPrise, Kyle Gorbski and
Marcus Smith are members of this group.

ETYWE: A concert band composed of 60 high school woodwind, brass &
percussion players from the East Tennessee region. Students began
rehearsals Thursday evening. They will present a FREE concert will be
on Saturday, March 3rd at
2:00 pm, Gentry
Auditorium, Henderson Humanities
Building, Jefferson City,
Carson-Newman
College. The MWHS band students participating are Kyle Gorbski, Andrew
LaPrise and Marcus Smith.
