Listen to the Trojan Football
Games
You can listen
to West High Trojan Football on WJDT FM 106.5 or visit the WJDT home
page to hear Trojan football on the web. WJDT FM.
Band of the Week
WBIR has chosen the Marching Trojans to be the Band of the Week. After the game the band will travel to WBIR's
studio and perform live on the news show. Be sure to tune in to Channel
10! The Band of the Week's video's were on WBIR's website after the game.
It's Hot!
All students must wear shorts and their
band t-shirt under their uniforms. They will travel in
their band t-shirts, shorts, uniform pants and scrubs. Jackets will
be in their uniform bags. Students will be wearing their jacket only
for the field show and for the live taping at WBIR. Mr. Thomas is going
to have them take off their jackets and hang them up during stand time.
Outdoor rehearsals/performances in the sweltering
August heat pose the same risks and health threats as summer sports
practices. Dehydration is perhaps the most common problem among those
who participate in prolonged physical activity in the extreme heat of
late summer. The body loses large amounts of fluid through
perspiration, drastically more so when the temperature is above 80
degrees and humidity is high. If these fluids are not replenished at the
first sign of dehydration, the body loses its ability to release extra
heat through perspiration. Without this self-cooling mechanism, the body
temperature can become dangerously high, and if there is not enough
fluid in the body to maintain kidney function, dehydration can be fatal,
even in young people.
The simplest way to prevent dehydration is to drink
plenty of water (and maybe even a sports drink) before any physical
activity, and to replenish these fluids often during and after any
workout. Drink plenty of fluids during vigorous or outdoor
activities, especially on hot days. Drinks of choice include water and
sports drinks; avoid fluids with caffeine such as tea, coffee,
and cola, as these can lead to dehydration. Surprisingly
enough, thirst is rarely a symptom of true dehydration. In fact, the
lack of thirst often experienced by dehydrated individuals is especially
problematic because this is often when their body needs fluids the most.
Directors and chaperones should instead watch for a sudden decrease in
energy and performance levels, and take any complaints of headaches,
dizziness, or body aches seriously.
Ice doesn't freeze three-feet thick over
night. — Chinese proverb.
And it doesn't freeze at all without electricity when the
temperature outside is almost 100°F.
Ice. Such a simple thing. But, as of the morning
before the Jamboree we had no electricity in the away side concession
stand. And no ice.
No electricity = no ice
No electricity = no cooler = warm Coke
Warm Coke = dissatisfied customers
No electricity = melted Freeze Pops
We wish to thank the following businesses for coming
to our rescue and donating bags and bags and bags and coolers and tubs
full of ice.
Chik-Fil-A
The Daily Bread
Food City
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Shoney's
Sonic
And thank you to Tim Hangartner, Lisa Harris and Marilyn Spoon for
hauling all of it to the concession stands.
Thank you also to the individual band families who brought
coolers full of ice.
Fans
It's HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Concession stand workers are going to
melt at the Jamboree. We are looking for a few fans - donated
or loaned. We can lock them up in our closet after each game.
Parent Meeting
There will be a parent meeting on August 16th at 7:00pm in the band room.
Mr. Thomas will have information regarding the upcoming season and will
answer questions from parents. Band Booster president, Marilyn Spoon,
has information for us and will also answer questions. Samples of all of the sportswear, blankets,
car magnets, etc. will be shown.
Order forms for the sportswear are available at the
meeting and on the forms page of this website.
Band Shoes
The band shoes are in at The Trade Center for those who ordered and paid
on 7/11 and 7/18.
Scrubs
Please go to Uniform
Express (between Arby's and Long John Silvers) to pick them up. All band
students need them for the game on 8/24.
You must pay for them when you pick them up.
The prices, including tax, are as follows:
XS - XL $14.22
2X - 3X $ 16.41
5X $ 18.60
Uniforms
Don't forget to buy black gloves and black socks for
this year. Gloves come in two styles - with Velcro
closures or loose at the wrist. It is up to the student which type to buy.
T-Shirts
Upperclassmen who ordered a new shirt: you may get your shirt after you
pay for it. Make check out to the West High Band Boosters.
2007 Varsity Football Schedule
All games are at 7:30pm, except the Jamboree.
Are you interested in
being a chaperone?
Please take time to read the Notes for Band Chaperones. This is an important list of duties
to ensure the safety of our band members. Chaperones have many
duties required of them to keep the band members safe and ensure
that the students and equipment arrive where needed. Please
familiarize yourself with the list before volunteering so that you
know what is expected from our chaperones.
Thank you for volunteering!!!
Football
schedule. We are responsible for the concessions at every home
football game. Varsity is listed first. The band plays at all
varsity games, so we are asking all parents to volunteer to work
at least two of these games either in the concession stands or as
chaperones. Home varsity football games require many volunteers;
six or seven to set up each game day morning and 20-25 to
work in the concession stands during the games plus five
chaperones. Varsity concessions open at approximately 6:00 and
generally are over by 10:00.
The Junior Varsity and Freshman
schedules are also listed. Since the band
does not play at these games, we are asking each band and flag
corps student to volunteer to work at least one of these
games. We will also need at least three adults. JV/Freshmen
concessions open at approximately 5:30 and are generally over by
8:30 or so.
You may volunteer
to work by emailing the Band Boosters. Simply click on the link
and state which dates you are able to help. Please
e-mail
if you can help.
Basketball and wrestling
schedules will be posted later in the year. Again, since the band
does not play at these games, we are asking parents and
students to volunteer in concessions on those dates.
Sportswear
Embroidered Items Order Form
Deadline to turn in order and money is August 29th.
Samples of the embroidered items will be shown
at the fall parent meeting.
Two items were not included on the form that was handed out:
1. If you want to order a plain maroon polo shirt with white embroidery,
just hand write it on the form up at the top under the other polo shirts.
2. Same thing for a plain, pullover maroon sweatshirt. Both cost $25.
These items are on the linked form now.
Screen Printed Items Order Form
Deadline to turn in order and money is August 29th.
Samples of the screen printed items will be shown
at the fall parent meeting.
Coupon Books
We still have
over 100 coupon books that have not been distributed.
Students -please try to sell more books so the band does
not lose money on these. Students also have books
out for which they have not paid.
Please turn in money for coupon books. Money is collected on
Wednesdays.
This is a
good way for students to earn money toward clinic
fees, band trips, and next year's band camp. Each book sells for $10. Of
that $10, we must pay the coupon book company $3.50.
The remaining $6.50 is profit.
Students earn $4.50 in their account and the band earns $2.00.
So, each book you buy really
only costs you $5.50 since $4.50 goes into your account.
Please note:
there is a change in what the band receives this year due to the
coupon book company raising their prices.
Band Practice
Practices are after school on Tuesdays until 4:30pm and Thursdays until
5:00pm. After school practices continue until after all competitions
held.
Competitions
The specific competitions in which the band
participates is determined each fall and announced in class and placed
on the monthly calendar and this website. Dates and times are announced
approximately two weeks before the competition. These dates cannot be announced
earlier because
Mr. Thomas has to wait for competitions to be announced, apply to compete, wait to be accepted, wait again
to find out the performance times, etc. Plan to attend at least two competitions
in October and probably one in September.
In recent years, the Marching Band has participated in the
Patriot Preview at Jefferson County High School, the Volunteer Classic
Marching Band Festival at Heritage High School in Maryville, the Foothills
Classic Marching Band Festival at Seymour High School in Seymour, and the
Appalachian Classic Marching Band Festival at Sullivan Central in
Blountville.
Bands are divided into classes according to size and each band receives a
score in several categories. There are many other band competitions in the
area that the band could attend.
Competitions are held on Saturdays and
take up the majority of the day and evening. Attendance at competitions is a
requirement for all band/flag corps members.
The band will be participating in two competitions this
fall. On October 13th the band will participate
in the Greeneville Band Classic 2007 at Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN.
Bands are divided into classes according to size and each band receives a
score in several categories. The five-member panel of judges will consist of
the following: Music Performance Ensemble - one judge - 20% of score, Visual
Performance Ensemble - one judge - 20% of score, Visual Effect - one judge
-20% of score, and Music Effect - two judges - 40% of score.
On October 20th the band will be attending
The Appalachian Classic
Marching Band Festival at
Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN. The band will receive
a score in each of the following categories: Music Ensemble,
Visual Ensemble, General Effect, Overall, Drum Major, Auxiliaries
and Percussion
Kudos to the Band
Lisa Henderson wrote and said, "Please let the band know that
I have received many compliments on their appearance and
performance in the Christmas Parade. I have heard things like,
'they were very professional' and 'sounded wonderful'. Great
JOB!!!"
Congratulations Marcus Smith!
Marcus Smith auditioned for the National Honor Band of
America and has been informed that he made it!

Honey Baked Ham Sales
November 7th, 2007 to December 5th, 2007
This fundraising campaign will begin on Wednesday,
November 7th. All money and sales sheets must be returned on or before
Wednesday, December 5th.
How this works:
Students and parents sell gift certificates in $10; $25;
$35 or $50 increments. Students collect the money – cash or check (payable
to MWHS Band Boosters) – for the full amount of the certificate. Be sure to
write the purchaser’s name and purchase amount on the sales sheet attached.
Return the attached sheet and money by no later than
Wednesday, December 5th.
Honey Baked Ham will print the actual gift certificate
which will be given to the students on December 12th. Each student must
distribute the certificates back to the person who purchased it.
The purchaser of the certificate has the option of either
visiting the Honey Baked Ham store to redeem their gift certificate OR they
may call Honey Baked Ham store and place and order for delivery. The
delivery order MUST be placed by December 19th as the delivery truck will be
in Morristown on December 21st between 12:00 noon and 5:00 pm in the parking
lot of Kay's Ice Cream in Jefferson City. For delivery items, if the amount of the purchase is less than
the amount of the certificate, the Honey Baked Ham representative will give
the appropriate change back. Should the purchase exceed the value of
certificate, the purchaser must pay the additional at the time the goods are
picked up.
For every $100 in ham certificates sold, the student will
receive $10 (or 10%) of the purchase amount in their band account. Band
account money can be used to pay for trips, clinic fees, band camp fees,
etc.

parade will begin at the corner of Main Street and James Street
and proceed down Main Street, turning right onto Jackson and
ending at the Old Court House.
Students can pick up their uniform, hat and instrument Friday
after school. Students must provide
transportation for themselves and their instrument. The band room
will be open for 30 minutes after the parade so that they can
return their uniform and instrument.
Christmas Parade
We will meet at First Baptist Church Parking lot at 6:30
P.M. Band members will need to pick up their instruments and
uniforms with hat and gloves from the band room by 4:30 P.M.

Manager?
Is there anyone who would like to volunteer to manage or co-manage
the concession stand for basketball? Nancy LaPrise would be
willing to shop for supplies if there is someone else who could do
the set-up, keep up with the inventory, etc. I'd bet that Marilyn
Spoon could use a break!
No one volunteered and Marilyn
continued to do too much.
Thank You
Thank you to
Mary Bobo, Sandy Storms, Dawn Bugher, Emily McIntire, and Dorothy
Rowe for their help at the first basketball game of the season.
The game was on the same night as the Christmas Parade. All of
these women are mothers of former band students who gave of
their time to run the concession stand so parents of current
students could watch the parade.
Thank you, thank you!!

Our final fund raising event for this year will be a Coke case sale.
Blank order forms will be available from Mrs. Harris each Wednesday
beginning March 26, 2008. Forms will also be on the information podium
located in the Band room. You may make additional copies of the order
form as needed. Forms are also available for you to print on our "Forms"
page of this website.
Please be sure to
complete one order form for each customer, indicating the customer’s
name, address, phone number and number of cases sold for each type of
drink. Do NOT put a check mark next to the type of drink, please
indicate the quantity on that line. Also, please be sure to fill in the
student’s name at the top of each form so we can give the appropriate
credit to the student’s account.
The top and bottom portions of each form should be filled out exactly
the same. Once complete, tear the form at the dotted line and give the
bottom half to your customer once they have paid. Return the top half of
the form WITH MONEY to Mrs. Harris beginning Wednesday, April 9, 2008.
The final date for turning in orders is Wednesday, April 30, 2008. NO
ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT DATE. Remember, each order form MUST
include payment. We will accept cash or checks (payable to MWHS Band
Boosters).
The cokes will be distributed on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 1:30 pm
to 4:00 pm at the away concession stand at Burke Toney Stadium, which is
located behind East High School. All coke products MUST be picked up
that day and customers MUST present the bottom half of the order form to
pick up their products. Any left over cases are returned to Coke, with
no refunds given. Be sure that your customers are aware they MUST pick
their cokes up during the distribution period!
Students will receive $2.00 credit in their band account for each
case sold. This credit can be used for band related expenses, such as
band camp or band trips for which there is a fee.
Thank you for your help in making this final fund raiser a success!

______________________________
We have received support from many individuals and area
businesses to help make this year's band program successful. We would
like to take this opportunity to thank:
Sonic Drive In
Mr. Jeff Burns is again donating all of the hamburger and hotdog buns, condiments and
hot drink cups for the season. This year he also donated hotdogs,
cocoa, stir sticks, pickles, barbeque meat, chili, cheese sauce, chips, ...most everything
that we use in the concession stand! Thank you, thank you, thank
you!!!!
Coca Cola
Coca Cola is again providing the coke products and dispensers for our
marching and concert band seasons. They also donate all of the coke cups
for the Band. Thank you for your support, Mary Green and Joey Brewer.
Pizza Inn
Mr. Jamie Lambert is providing pizzas at a great price as well as donating
paper products for the concession stands.
Fabritech
Mr. Randall Fish provided the graphic plates for the Band cart.
Tractor Supply
Jeremy Brooker at Tractor Supply gave us a huge discount on our new
cart. We're using that cart at the football field to tote supplies from
one stand to the other. It is also used during the week to carry
drinking water out to the practice field for the band and at away games
to transport equipment.
Alpha Outdoor Equipment
Curtis, Mike and Michael at
Alpha Outdoor Equipment has given us a large discount on a very nice
powerful tractor. Mr. Thomas will be able to pull the rack out to the
practice field now. Thank you!
U.S. Fence
Thanks to U.S. Fence for their support of our band
program.
Wal-Mart
The past two years Wal-Mart has donated over $2000.00.
Last year Robert Lowry applied for, and received, what they call a
"Matching Grant". They match up to $1000.00 of a fund raiser. He showed
the income from the concession stands from one football game.
They also donated $500.00 from a grant they call the
Volunteerism grant. If you volunteer 25 hours within the prior six months they will give $250.00, you could get this twice a year.
Food City
Food City donated $250 in Robert Lowry's name.
Thank You to Our Band Families
The Band Boosters put out requests for things the band
needs/wants/desires on a regular basis. And someone ALWAYS comes
through! Here are just a few of the latest things we asked for and
received:
Sand Blasting
Is there anyone who can sand blast a trailer for us? It's in great
disrepair - rusted and
needs to be taken down to bare metal so it can be repainted. You should see it now! Thank you to
Kevin McClanahan and Tim Hangartner for volunteering their time (LOTS of
time) to do the sandblasting,
AND
painting, rewiring and bearings on the trailer.
Photos
Once again this year Mike Smith is taking photos at the games,
competitions and parades. Everyone enjoys the photos: band
students, former band students, their parents and extended families. Thank you so very
much, Mike. Check out CoachT.com for more of Mike's photographs.
New Tractor
Our tractor has died. Does anyone have a lawn mower they could donate to
the band? No deck is needed, it just has to be able to pull the cart.
Mr. Thomas uses it to haul the rack back and forth to the practice field
every day. Thank you to the McAnears for donating their lawnmower. We
were able to use this one as a trade-in on a larger tractor.
Equipment Bus
Once again this year Howard Waldron is driving the bus to all of the
games. Thanks Howard.
Refrigerator
The Band Boosters were in search of a refrigerator for the concession
stand.
Mrs. Norma Anderberg (Andrew and Hannah LaPrise's grandma) donated a refrigerator/freezer for our away
side stand. Come enjoy Freeze Pops at the next game!
And many, many thanks to Phil, Susie and Josh Ball.
They transported the refrigerator from Crossville, stored it for a month
and then brought it to the stand. Thanks!
Repairs on the Cart
Tim Hangartner in action again. Have you seen the cart? It's awesome.
Thank you Tim for the many hours spent customizing the cart!
Repairs on the Rack
Robert Lowry to the rescue. He sanded and painted the rack and it looks
great! Thank you Robert.
Uniform Hemming/Pinning and T-Shirt Fittings
Many people came to our aid. Mary Bobo and Sara Hosman - and they no
longer have students in the band! Susie Ball, Eileen Bowers, Lisa
Harris, Connie Pope, Lisa Sizemore, Marilyn Spoon, Paula Waldron...and ?
Who did we miss?
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
Thank everyone who gave up their evening to help us in the
concession stands during the East/West game. What a night! We
opened the away side stand a few minutes after 5:00pm (yes, 5:00!)
and we were never without a line until after the game ended. The
bands played their halftime shows without any of us knowing they
were on the field!
Away Side - Susie & Phil Ball, Lisa & Robert Cloud, Connie &
Jim Pope, Robert Lowry, Rina Smith, Nancy & Donald Gregg, Lisa
Harris and Nancy LaPrise worked all evening. Plus Tim Hangartner
who came to rescue us during third quarter.
Home Side - Paula Waldron, Sara Hosman*, Debora David, Deanne Malousis, Kim Steiner, Sheryl
& Donald Gray, Robert Barber, Regina Campbell, Sharon & Paul
McAnear, and Marilyn & Donald Spoon worked all evening. Plus
Sharon McGill and Eileen Bowers came to the rescue during
third quarter.
(*Sara doesn't even have anyone in the band this
year!)
Many local band programs have
participation fees of $300-500. You can keep this program available to
all students by donating your time to support the program.
The Band
Boosters donated in excess of $30,000 to the Band program during
the 2006 to 2007 school year, with most of that money being earned
through the operation of our concession stands. That calculates to
more than $350 donated for each child in the program - money that
parents did not have to spend for their child to participate in
band. In exchange, we are asking all parents to volunteer at least
8 hours of their time to band boosters this year. Volunteer hours can be spent working
in concessions, chaperoning, altering/repairing uniforms, soliciting
donations from area businesses, working at the pancake breakfast,
working at the Coke case sale, coordinating
schedules with parents, planning parties, etc. PLEASE be generous
with your time!
