Photography hints from Mr. Smith:
"I set my ISO to 1600 and my shutter speed anywhere from 1/50 to 1/125 depending on the aperture which varies from f/3.5 to f/5.6 on my zoom lens.  So 1/60 is definitely a good choice.  If the camera has a metering mode, setting it to partial or spot metering helps as well.  Also, a tripod or monopod will make a huge difference."

Taking pictures of the marching band: A flash won't work because they are too far away, and using no flash yields blurry pictures because the kids are moving. Because you're taking pictures from a significant distance and under low lighting, two things are very important. First, it is important to set your digital camera's ASA to as high a speed as you can (most digital cameras have a 1600 ASA setting). This will capture the movement without requiring a flash. Second, make sure your shutter speed is no slower than 1/60th a second - because your daughter is moving, you want to capture that movement. Alternately, many cameras have a "Sports mode" - this setting takes into consideration that the subjects will be moving, and helps you get great shots.
