Local Band Opportunities and Summer Camps

Walters State Community Band and Jazz Band
The Community Band, under the direction of Tom Shupe, meets weekly during the fall and spring semesters. The Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Thomas, also meets weekly. Both bands give two concerts per year, one in December and one in the spring.  The concerts are free to the public and take place in the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the Morristown Campus of WSCC. Many MWHS students and Hamblen county band directors take part in these bands. Auditions are now required for new members.

Jamey Aebersold
Each Year, the Summer Jazz Workshops assemble more than 60 of the nation's leading educators and performers dedicated to providing an intensive learning experience for musicians of all ages and levels. Theory Classes, Ear Training, Combo Performance, and Master Class Sessions allow individuals the opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest potential. Also available on the website are Jamey's books.

Lee University Summer Music Camp
Students who are entering grades 9-12 and have a passion for the musical arts should consider this camp. You may choose orchestra, vocal, wind or jazz camp.

Carson~Newman Band Camp
Carson~Newman hosts an instrumental band camp each summer. It is a wonderful opportunity for band students to improve their skills, perform with students from other areas and work with new directors. Campers give a concert at the end of the week.

Instrumental Music Organizations

East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association
This is the East Tennessee Music Educators organization. The ETSBOA promotes the advancement of instrumental music education in the schools. They also encourage music activities through festivals and clinics.

Junior and Senior Clinic Music
Music for Clinic Auditions is available on the ETSBOA site.

The National Association for Music Education
The mission of the MENC is "To advance music education by encouraging the study and making of music by all". (Formerly Music Educators National Conference, the association's name was changed in 1998 to MENC: The National Association for Music Education to better reflect its mission).

Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra
The primary education initiative of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra is the Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra. Sponsored in conjunction with the University of Tennessee School of Music, the youth orchestra is selected by audition and rehearses weekly for 3 months before presenting a joint concert with the KJO. The group is directed by Don Hough and coached by several members of the KJO. KJYO

Auditions for the 2009-2010 Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra will be held on Wednesday, September 23 at 7pm at the University of Tennessee School of Music.  Saxophonist Alan Wyatt will conduct the band this year, with support from various members of the KJO.

Auditions are open to students grades 9 - 12. The group will rehearse each Wednesday evening at 7pm at the UT School of Music and will perform several concerts throughout the school year.

The KYJO is looking for people who play the following instruments:

alto, tenor and baritone saxophone
trumpet
trombone
piano
guitar
bass
drum set
vocals

East Tennessee Youth Wind Ensemble - ETYWE
The ETYWE is a highly select, All-State quality band of approximately 62 members, open by invitation to high school students from throughout East Tennessee. The group meets twice each spring to rehearse and perform band music drawn from both the standard repertoire and exciting new works for band.

Students are invited to join ETYWE based on the results of their placement in the All-State East auditions. Those placing highest in each section are given first opportunity to join, before alternates are contacted. Once a member of ETWYE students may continue regardless of future audition results.

Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association
Sponsored by the Knoxville Symphony League and the Knoxville Symphony Society, the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association is comprised of five ensembles totaling over 250 student musicians:

• The Youth Symphony
• The Youth Chamber Orchestra
• The Sinfonia
• The Philharmonia
• The Junior Philharmonia

It performs at least three concerts during the season and is open to all students grade 12 and younger who play an orchestral instrument (including keyboard). Auditions are required. 

The Oak Ridge Youth Symphony Orchestra (ORYSO) 
An organization devoted to the promotion of classical music in the Oak Ridge and East Tennessee community. Includes 2 full orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and a concerto competition. Weekly (Sunday afternoons) orchestra rehearsals and the Summer Music Conservatory. ORYSO operates under the wing of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association (ORCMA).

The Tennessee Theatre enriches our area by offering a multitude of performing arts events and classic films.

Knoxville Jazz Orchestra
The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra is an exciting ensemble made up of top professional musicians from around the region. The group is led by trumpeter Vance Thompson and performs regularly in the Knoxville area.

The Knoxville Symphony
The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performs Classical Music. The term "classical music" can represent anything from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to a Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto. Generally, classical music is played by a symphonic ensemble comprised of strings (violins, violas, cellos and basses), woodwinds (clarinets, oboes, flutes and bassoons), brass (trumpets, French horns, trombones and tubas) and percussion (drums, xylophones and bells), or some combination thereof.
